A large boat – for example a cruise ship – is a real floating miniature city; it contains a big number of risk classes, concentrated in confined and closed spaces, found on land: restaurants, hotels, theaters, professional kitchens, hospitals, engine rooms, machinery spaces, power&energy areas, various material deposits, flammable liquids. Moreover, guests are to be considered poorly aware of the safety and security spaces and procedures.
The presence of fire safety systems is an essential and fundamental factor for navigation to be allowed.
The systems used on board are based on different technologies and techniques, each suitable for specific applications. For this reason, certifications issued by authorized bodies in this field are necessary in order to operate, design and test on board systems – as they require highly specialized preparation and training (see Certification section).
